SMACS 2024-2025 Board
Giselle brown
Co-President
4th Year
Chemistry Major, Specialization in Computing
I'm Giselle (she/her), and I was born in London, UK, but raised in San Diego, California. I spent two summers designing and synthesizing novel drugs in immunology for a small molecule biotech. I like to read, explore new coffee shops and visit museums. My favorite thing about SMACS is that its open for everyone to find a community within chemistry at UCLA.
Tim Duong
Co-President
4th Year
Chemistry Major, Physical Chemistry Concentration
I currently do research in the Neuhauser group, focusing on method development in the area of electronic structure theory and quantum dynamics. I am also co-advised in the Caram group where he works on elucidating disorders in two-dimensional and tubular cyanine dye aggregates through computational methods. Outside of my studies, I enjoy playing video games, watching anime, and sleeping.
linus murphy
Professional Development Chair
3rd Year
Chemistry Major
My name is Linus Murphy (they/he) and I'm a 3rd year. I'm a physical chemistry major by day, and a movie enthusiast also by day. By night I go to sleep. My favorite parts about SMACS are the socials and the green chemistry journal days. Feel free to message me (instagram handle: @linus.murphy) with movie and music recs, or if you want help with research/job stuff.
Helen Zarayan
Service Chair
3rd Year Transfer
Biology Major
I'm a 3rd-year biology major with experience in sustainable polymer chemistry research. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar, crocheting, and watching tv shows. I'm excited for outreach events and having an amazing year with everyone!
Rebecca lee
Green Chemistry Chair
3rd Year
Biochemistry Major, Mathematics Minor
Hi everyone! I'm Rebecca Lee, a third year Biochemistry major with a minor in Mathematics, and your Green Chemistry chair! I'm an avid learner with research interests in molecular biophysics and photosynthesis; I'm currently in the Chen Lab working on ribozyme evolution, and in the Fleming Lab at UC Berkeley studying photoprotection mechanisms. I love SMACS for its incredibly inspiring members, the exposure to all facets of chemistry, and the opportunities to give back through service. Outside of SMACS, I'm in RSS and a CBSO violinist, and I also enjoy hiking, figure skating, and singing!
Bedelia Law
Publicity Chair
3rd Year
Chemistry Major
I am a 3rd year chemistry major. I joined SMACS my first year, which has helped me socially and academically within the chem (and adjacent) circles. I’m also a member of the Kwon lab where my research focuses on screening reduction and oxidation reagents to help create a library of chiral phosphine organocatalysts. I’m interested in pursuing a career in pharmaceutical patenting. Some fun facts about me: I enjoy reading mysteries, going down true crime rabbit holes, and consuming peanut butter!
chahak gupta
Secretary
2nd Year
Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics
Hi, I'm Chahak (che-heck, she/her)! I will switch my major when the time comes (to chemistry probably because I liked 14AE & 30B). I joined SMACS because I enjoy chemistry and I thought the people were friendly and funny. I might be pre-med so you can find me doing pre-med things (hospital volunteering, USJ, etc.) on campus. In my free time, I like talking, sleeping, watching kdramas/movies/kpop mvs, Big Blue Bussing to places, and more recently sweating about my Duolingo XP. I am lonely & friendly so feel free to talk to me about anything except the weather or where I'm from (/j you can do that too! discord: chalk1230).
Felisha Kuo
Treasurer
2nd Year
Chemistry Major
My name is Felisha and I am a second year chemistry major and the current treasurer for SMACS. I am interested in applied chemistry for renewable energy (photochemistry, hydrogen fuels, etc.). When I am not studying you'll probably find me enjoying a book, jogging through Westwood, or on a bus to Santa Monica. I joined SMACS my freshman year and my favorite thing about the club are the amazing people I've met here!
